An Island Wedding

September 7th, 2010 by Diana

The field had been mowed and the fragrant hay was rolled up into huge circular bales, wrapped in white plastic, and stacked out of the way. The gate to the field was open with several acres for cars to park. In one corner there was a barbeque going full force and there were tables laden with food and coolers full of wine and soft drinks and water. The day was sunny and bright and many guests choose to relax in the white tent that had been rented for the event.

It was an island wedding, with guests from… read full article

The Gift of a Tourist

August 26th, 2010 by Diana

Roundabout the end of July, the people on San Juan Island can start getting, shall we say, a tad bit irritated with the tourist congestion. At our island, the ferry lets cars and people off in Friday Harbor, our main town. All the cars unload and drive up the main street past all the businesses. So, when the ferry unloads, it might be a wait at the grocery store or a few times around the block to find a parking spot right adjacent to where you want to go. The beautiful thing is that we island residents are… read full article

Want to do something special for your next 4th of July?

July 28th, 2010 by Bette

Consider visiting San Juan Island, WA.

What a beautiful place San Juan Island is to celebrate the 4th of July. You have your choice of watching the fireworks at Roche Harbor Marina or in the heart of town in Friday Harbor. Both are great places to kick back with your favorite beverage & people watch.

I started the festivities by watching our local parade with my dog, Brook. If you haven’t watched a local parade, you’re missing something; the energy is infectious. My day continued with our Pig War picnic’s great food, music and more people watching.

Internet access – what’s available here?

June 24th, 2010 by Annette

Visitors and prospective home buyers coming to San Juan Island might wonder what sort of connectivity options are available when they arrive here. With the demand for access to email or wanting to electronically manage personal data or specific websites, it’s always good to know what the island can offer either for someone just swinging by for the weekend or perhaps looking to buy property and wanting to stay connected.
Internet access, whether it be via Ethernet or wifi is certainly available on the island. How it differs from areas like Seattle or Portland is how it’s… read full article

Being Old in Friday Harbor

April 16th, 2010 by Diana

According to epodunik.com, the San Juan Islands have a 19% population of people over 65. 35.7 percent of the population is between 45-64. That means that over half of the people that live in the islands are over 45. I am sixty-six. When I was 21, in the youth-worshipping culture of the sixties, I used to think that 66 was really old. I studied various cultures and decided that it would probably be a good idea to move to Japan when I got older, a place where people respected the wisdom of age.

But I am going to… read full article

Life in Friday Harbor

April 2nd, 2010 by Diana

It was just another Monday, but it was a good small town day today.

Another agent’s Seller came into the real estate office and saw me and called me by name. We chatted about nothing important.

A young man that owned a BIG truck parked next to my car looked out a window to see me outside, loading up my French Bulldog on the passenger side of my car.  He came outside to offer to move his vehicle so I wouldn’t have to struggle to open my driver’s side door.  It was my fault; I’d parked too close… read full article

Cape San Juan Community

March 23rd, 2010 by Sybil

One of my current home sales is in the Cape San Juan community on San Juan Island. When my husband first introduced me to the island, this was one of my favorite areas of the island. It’s been awhile since I’ve spent much time at the south end, but I remember the draw. The Cape San Juan community is at the southern tip of San Juan Island and looks over Cattle Pass to Lopez Island and you look out to the Strait of Juan de Fuca making it a beautiful drive.

The community itself is unique in that… read full article
