Things to Do Week of May 28 to June 3

Sometimes I think it is not Disneyland, but rather Friday Harbor that is the happiest place on Earth. The Memorial Day weekend brought hoards of guests for the holiday weekend and the weekend of June 2 and 3 will certainly compete with the 21st Annual San Juan Artists’ Studio Tour. Go to www.sanjuanislandartists.com for your online copy of the brochure, which will also be available from many merchants in town. From 10:00 am until 5:00 pm many of San Juan Island’s Artists will have Open Houses to display their studios and their art to guests. I have gone on parts of the tour for several years.

The Studio Tour, a free event, allows you to pick and choose which kinds of artwork interest you and meet the friendly creators. There are twenty studios and an island map for you so you won’t get lost. Many of the artists are sharing their studios with guest artists for the tour. There is photography, fine arts sculpture, acrylic and oil paintings, textile arts, fusion glass, jewelry and clothing, woodworking, potters, porcelains, printmaking, and more! Several artists have demonstrations at their studios. San Juan Island is lucky to have so many creative people in their community and this once yearly event is not to be missed.

Also on San Juan, in the evening, on June 2 is a speech by Dr. Julie Stein who will discuss what scholars have learned in more than 65 years or archaeology in the San Juan Islands. This is scheduled from 7:00 to 8:30 pm at the San Juan Island library.

On Orcas Island, don’t miss the Orcas Island Community Band which will present its spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday June 2 at Orcas Center. The band will play American dances, European marches, movie music and some big band classics. Admission is free. The concert should be fun for all ages. The 40-member band welcomes musicians of all ages and abilities. Music and art, two things islanders cherish and appreciate, even when they themselves do not have the talent to create either.
